Ear Forceps: Crocodile, Alligator & Aural Instruments

Ear forceps are fine, long-shafted grasping instruments designed to work down the narrow ear canal without blocking the surgeon's view. Because the canal is only a few millimetres wide and the eardrum sits at the end of it, these instruments use slim shafts and small jaws that open at the tip — the crocodile and alligator action — so tissue, foreign bodies, and grafts can be grasped under direct vision. NJ Medical Instruments manufactures the full range in surgical-grade stainless steel, including Hartmann crocodile forceps, micro alligator patterns, and aural instruments, supplied worldwide direct from the factory for individual purchase and for bulk, wholesale, and OEM/private-label supply.

Crocodile and alligator forceps

Crocodile (alligator) forceps have a hinged jaw at the tip that opens and closes while the shaft stays still. This is what makes them suitable for ear work: the shaft occupies almost no space in the canal and the surgeon keeps a clear line of sight to the jaws. Hartmann is the best-known pattern, used to remove foreign bodies, place and position grafts, and grasp polyps and granulation tissue. Micro alligator forceps are the finest versions, used in middle-ear and ossicular work where the structures are millimetres across.

Aural & myringotomy instruments

Aural specula hold the canal open and straight so instruments can pass. Ear curettes and cerumen hooks remove wax and debris. Myringotomy instruments — knives and grommet-placing forceps — are used to incise the eardrum and insert ventilation tubes to drain middle-ear fluid.

Frequently asked questions

What are ear forceps used for?

Ear forceps are used to grasp and remove foreign bodies, polyps, and granulation tissue from the ear canal, and to position grafts and ventilation tubes. Their slim shafts and tip-hinged jaws let the surgeon work down the narrow canal while keeping the jaws in view.

What are crocodile forceps?

Crocodile forceps, also called alligator forceps, have jaws hinged at the tip that open and close while the shaft remains still. This design lets them work inside the narrow ear canal without the shaft obstructing the view. Hartmann is the best-known pattern.

What is the difference between crocodile and alligator forceps?

They are the same instrument — both names describe the tip-hinged jaw action that opens like a crocodile's mouth. Crocodile is the more common term in Europe and alligator in the United States.

What are micro alligator forceps used for?

Micro alligator forceps are the finest ear forceps, used in middle-ear and ossicular surgery where the structures being handled are only millimetres in size, such as placing grafts or manipulating prostheses.

What instruments are used for myringotomy?

Myringotomy uses a fine myringotomy knife to incise the eardrum, an aural speculum to hold the canal open, suction to clear fluid, and grommet-placing forceps to insert a ventilation tube.
