Surgical Instruments: General Surgery Scissors, Forceps, Clamps & Sets

Surgical instruments are the core hand tools used across general and specialist surgery to cut, grasp, clamp, retract, and suture tissue. A general surgery tray brings together scissors for cutting and dissection, artery forceps and clamps to control bleeding, tissue and thumb forceps to hold, needle holders to suture, and retractors to expose the operative field. NJ Medical Instruments manufactures the full range in surgical-grade stainless steel — including tungsten-carbide patterns for a longer-lasting edge — supplied worldwide direct from the factory for individual purchase and for bulk, wholesale, OEM, and complete-set supply.

The core groups of surgical instruments

Scissors — Mayo, Metzenbaum, dissecting, and suture-removal patterns — cut and separate tissue and sutures. Tungsten-carbide and SuperCut versions keep a sharper edge for longer.

Artery forceps & ligature clamps (haemostats) clamp blood vessels and control bleeding. Patterns range from fine mosquito forceps to heavy Kocher and Rochester clamps. See our artery forceps buying guide for a full pattern comparison.

Bone cutters & rongeurs cut, trim, and remove bone in orthopaedic and reconstructive procedures, with sharp, hard-wearing jaws built for repeated force.

Curettes, raspatories & elevators scrape, lift, and separate tissue and periosteum from bone.

Sterilization containers keep instrument sets organised, protected, and ready for autoclaving between procedures.

Frequently asked questions

What are the basic surgical instruments?

A basic surgical set includes scissors (Mayo and Metzenbaum) for cutting, artery forceps and clamps to control bleeding, tissue and thumb forceps to grasp, needle holders to suture, scalpel handles to incise, and retractors to expose the operative field.

What are tungsten carbide surgical instruments?

Tungsten carbide instruments have hard tungsten-carbide inserts bonded to the working surfaces — the blades of scissors or the jaws of needle holders. They hold a sharper edge and grip far longer than standard stainless steel, and are usually identified by gold-coloured handles.

What is the difference between Kocher and Allis forceps?

Kocher forceps have longitudinal serrations ending in 1x2 interlocking teeth and grip tough, slippery tissue firmly. Allis forceps have lighter jaws with a row of fine teeth that hold delicate tissue securely without crushing. Kocher grips firmly; Allis holds gently.

What is the difference between Mayo and Metzenbaum scissors?

Mayo scissors are heavier, with thicker blades for cutting tough tissue and sutures. Metzenbaum scissors are lighter and finer, designed for delicate dissection of softer tissue. Both come in straight and curved patterns.

Do you supply complete surgical sets and wholesale quantities?

Yes. As a direct manufacturer we build complete surgical instrument sets and supply all instruments in bulk and wholesale quantities to hospitals, clinics, and distributors, with OEM / private-label options to custom specifications.

Are your surgical instruments reusable and autoclavable?

Yes. Our surgical-grade stainless steel instruments are fully reusable and withstand repeated autoclave sterilisation, and are manufactured to international standards.
