The three-pronged spreading mechanism distributes the dilating force evenly across the tracheal cartilage rings rather than concentrating it on two points, which reduces the risk of cartilage fracture during forced dilation.
The locking ratchet holds the stoma at the selected diameter, freeing both of the surgeon’s hands for tube insertion and cuff inflation. At 16 cm overall length the dilator provides adequate distance between the handle and the operative field.
