Dissecting Scissors: Metzenbaum, Mayo & Curved Patterns

Dissecting scissors separate tissue planes rather than simply cutting through them, which is why they are the most-used scissors on almost every surgical tray. Their blades are blunt-tipped, so the closed tips can be pushed into a plane and then opened to spread tissue apart without perforating vessels or bowel — the technique surgeons call blunt dissection. The same instrument then cuts what needs dividing. NJ Medical Instruments manufactures the full range in surgical-grade stainless steel, in straight and curved patterns and in tungsten-carbide and SuperCut versions, supplied worldwide direct from the factory for individual purchase and for bulk, wholesale, and OEM/private-label supply.

Metzenbaum vs Mayo

Metzenbaum scissors are the fine dissectors: long shanks with short, slim blades, built for delicate tissue. The long-handle-to-short-blade ratio gives control at depth, which is why they are the first choice for dissecting soft tissue in body cavities.Mayo scissors are the heavy pair: thicker, stronger blades for tough tissue, fascia, and cutting suture. A useful rule in theatre is that Metzenbaum cut tissue and Mayo cut everything else — using Metzenbaums on suture or fascia will blunt them quickly.

Straight or curved?

Curved blades are standard for dissection. The curve lets the surgeon see past the blades to the tip, follow the natural contour of tissue planes, and cut with better visibility of what lies beyond. Straight blades deliver more direct cutting force along a line, so they suit cutting suture and firmer, more superficial structures.

Frequently asked questions

What are dissecting scissors used for?

Dissecting scissors separate tissue planes and cut tissue. Their blunt tips can be inserted closed into a plane and then opened to spread tissue apart without perforating vessels or organs, and the same instrument cuts what needs dividing.

What is the difference between Metzenbaum and Mayo scissors?

Metzenbaum scissors have long shanks with short, slim blades for delicate tissue dissection at depth. Mayo scissors have thicker, stronger blades for tough tissue, fascia, and suture. A common rule is that Metzenbaum cut tissue and Mayo cut everything else.

Should dissecting scissors be curved or straight?

Curved blades are standard for dissection because the surgeon can see past them to the tip and follow the contour of tissue planes. Straight blades give more direct cutting force and suit suture and firmer superficial structures.

Why are dissecting scissors blunt-tipped?

Blunt tips let the closed scissors be pushed safely into a tissue plane and then opened to spread the tissue apart. A sharp tip would risk perforating vessels, bowel, or other structures during that manoeuvre.

Can dissecting scissors be used to cut suture?

Mayo scissors can. Metzenbaum scissors should not be used on suture, as cutting suture material blunts their fine edges quickly and they are expensive to replace. Most trays include a dedicated suture pair for that reason.

Do you supply dissecting scissors in bulk or for OEM / private label?

Yes. As a direct manufacturer we supply all dissecting scissors in bulk and wholesale quantities and offer OEM / private-label production to custom specifications. Contact us by email or WhatsApp for volume pricing.
