Orthopedic Supports & Braces: Joint Support, Compression & Immobilisation

Orthopedic supports and braces are worn externally to stabilise a joint, limit movement that would aggravate an injury, and apply compression that helps control swelling. They serve three distinct purposes that are easy to confuse: support during activity for a joint that feels unstable, protection during recovery so healing tissue is not re-stressed, and immobilisation where movement must be prevented altogether. The right choice depends less on the body part than on which of those three you actually need. NJ Medical Instruments supplies the full range — wrist, thumb, elbow, shoulder, knee, ankle, calf and lumbar — worldwide direct from the factory, for individual purchase and for bulk, wholesale, and OEM/private-label supply.

How much support do you need?

Elastic and compression supports are the lightest option. They apply even pressure, retain warmth, and give proprioceptive feedback — the sense of where the joint is — without restricting movement. Suited to mild strains and to ongoing activity where the joint simply needs reassurance.

Hinged and stayed braces add metal or polymer stays that permit movement in the intended plane while resisting the direction that causes pain. A hinged knee brace, for example, allows flexion and extension but resists sideways stress.

Rigid and immobilising braces hold the joint in a fixed position. These are used post-injury or post-operatively where any movement risks disrupting healing.

Sizing and fit

Fit determines whether a brace works. A support that is too loose slides out of position and provides nothing; one that is too tight restricts circulation. Sizing is normally taken from a circumference measurement at a defined point — around the joint or above and below it — rather than from clothing or shoe size. Where a brace is left/right specific, this is stated, since an anatomically shaped brace fitted to the wrong side will not sit correctly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a support and a brace?

The terms overlap, but in general a support is a lighter elastic or compression garment that aids a joint without restricting movement, while a brace adds stays, hinges, or rigid panels to actively limit movement in a particular direction.

How do I choose the right size?

Sizing is normally based on a circumference measurement taken at a defined point around or near the joint, not on clothing or shoe size. A support that is too loose slides out of position and does nothing; one that is too tight restricts circulation.

What does a hinged brace do that an elastic support does not?

A hinged brace permits movement in the intended plane while resisting the direction that causes pain or instability. An elastic support applies compression and proprioceptive feedback but does not physically restrict movement.

Should a brace be worn all day?

Wearing time depends on the purpose and should follow the advice of the treating clinician. Supports used during activity are often worn only for that activity, while braces used for immobilisation after injury or surgery are worn as instructed for the healing period.

Are orthopedic supports left and right specific?

Some are. Anatomically shaped braces for joints such as the knee, ankle, and thumb are often made in left and right versions, and this is stated on the product. Symmetrical elastic sleeves and belts usually fit either side.

Do you supply supports and braces in bulk or for OEM / private label?

Yes. We supply orthopedic supports and braces in bulk and wholesale quantities and offer OEM / private-label production with custom sizing, colours, packaging, and branding. Contact us by email or WhatsApp for volume pricing.
