The thumb is the hardest joint to brace usefully, because the moment you restrict it you have restricted the hand. Unlike a knee or an ankle, this joint is in continuous use for tasks the wearer cannot simply postpone — writing, dressing, holding a phone, opening a door. Spica shape: bracing the base without trapping the tip
Most thumb supports use a spica form — a wrap that encircles the wrist and sends a limb of material up around the base of the thumb, forming a Y around the web space.
