Laryngeal suction tubes are built for the specific geometry of the airway: they must pass through a laryngoscope or alongside an endotracheal tube, which limits diameter, and they must reach the vocal cords and subglottic region, which sets the minimum length. Three diameters are offered because the airway varies with patient size and the nature of the obstruction: 2.0 mm for paediatric and tight adult airways, 2.5 mm as the general adult bore, and 3.0 mm for rapid clearance of thick secretions.
Each tube is smooth-bored stainless steel, shaped for atraumatic passage through the larynx without catching on the false cords or arytenoids.
