Most forceps are designed around what they grip. This one is designed around who is on the other end of it. Dressing changes are done on conscious patients, often on wounds that are already tender, and a pointed or edged tip touching that area is felt immediately. Rounding the tips means the instrument can work against skin and dressing material without a defined point pressing anywhere.
Serrations then supply the grip that blunt tips give up. Gauze, packing and dressing material are light but bulky, and they slip out of a smooth jaw at the moment they are lifted; ridged jaws hold them by friction across the face without needing the pinch a tooth would apply. The combination is why this is a ward and clinic instrument as much as a theatre one.
