Tissue Forceps – Round Jaws with Teeth, Ridged Handle

Rounding the tips removes the corners, which is where a conventional jaw does its damage. On a square-ended forceps the two outer corners carry a disproportionate share of the closing force, and on a vessel or a fine flap those corners mark the tissue before the centre of the jaw has gripped anything. A rounded profile distributes that load evenly along the contact area.

Teeth then provide the hold that a smooth rounded tip could not. The combination is what suits cardiovascular and microsurgical work: secure enough to keep a structure from slipping under traction, shaped so that the security does not come at the cost of a crushed edge. The ridged handle matters over a long case — these procedures are worked at sustained light pressure, and a smooth handle gradually turns in the fingers.
