Adson Thumb Forceps, 12.1 cm – Fenestrated Handles

A thumb forceps is picked up and set down hundreds of times in a long operating list, and held closed between finger and thumb for much of that. Weight in the handle is weight the hand supports continuously, and by the end of a list that accumulates as fatigue — which shows up as coarser control rather than as tiredness the surgeon notices. Fenestrating the handle removes metal from where it contributes least.

The cut-outs also change how the arms spring. Removing material from the flat of the handle softens the closing resistance slightly, so less finger pressure is needed to bring the tips together and the surgeon gets finer feedback on how firmly the tissue is actually held. That is why this version is favoured in plastic surgery, where the same pair of forceps is in the hand for hours and the tissue being held is unforgiving.
