Thorpe Caliper, 11 cm – 80 mm Measuring Range

80 mm of range on an 11 cm body is a high proportion — most of the instrument is scale. That suits the work it is named for: orthopaedic and maxillofacial measurements routinely run to several centimetres, across an osteotomy or between fixation points, and a caliper that runs out of range partway through is simply the wrong tool. The short body keeps it controllable in the hand while the jaws cover that span.

Implant placement is the case where the reading has to be right the first time. A component sized from a measurement that was a few millimetres out does not reveal the error until it is being seated, by which point the bone has been prepared for it. A simple, rigid caliper with a clear scale and no mechanism to slip is what that situation calls for.
