A fixed-shape retractor assumes the anatomy will match it. In paediatric surgery that assumption fails often — the same procedure on a neonate and on a six-year-old needs different curves, and no set of fixed blades covers that range. A malleable ribbon is shaped by hand for the patient in front of the surgeon, then reshaped for the next one.
The delicate grade matters alongside it. Paediatric tissue is thinner and less tolerant of pressure than adult tissue, and a ribbon stiff enough to hold a heavy adult retraction would bear too hard on it. This one is made light enough to hold shape under a child’s tissue load without pressing beyond what that tissue takes.
