Coronary vessels are small, thin-walled and under pressure, and the cut made in one has to be clean on the first pass — a ragged arteriotomy will not hold a suture line well. Supercut blades carry a razor edge rather than a conventional scissor edge, so they slice rather than shear, which is what produces an edge the anastomosis can be built on.
17.5 cm places the hand well back from the vessel while the blades work on it. In cardiovascular surgery the field is deep and crowded with clamps and cannulae, so the extra length is about keeping the surgeon’s hand out of a space that is already full rather than about reaching further.
