Castroviejo Epker Caliper, 18 cm – Straight Tips

18 cm is twice the length of the ophthalmic Castroviejo calipers, and maxillofacial work is why. Measurements there are taken on bone at the bottom of an exposure — across an osteotomy, between fixation points, along a segment being repositioned — so the tips must reach the bone while the scale stays where the surgeon can read it.

Straight tips give the most direct access and the clearest view of where the points are sitting, which is what makes this the default of the two Epker versions. The measurement is only as good as the placement, and on bone the surgeon needs to see that each tip is on the intended landmark rather than a millimetre off it. The angled version trades that visibility for access into deeper or more confined areas where a straight tip cannot be brought square.
