The universal adaptor is the practical point of this version. A lighted retractor tied to one manufacturer’s light box is only usable where that box is, and theatres rarely standardise on one. An adaptor that fits standard sources means the instrument works with the light already in the room rather than requiring a matched system to be bought alongside it.

Angling the shaft addresses fatigue. A breast pocket is held open for the length of the procedure, often by the surgeon’s own non-dominant hand, and a straight instrument forces the wrist into a position it cannot hold comfortably for that long. The angle brings the blade onto the working plane while leaving the hand in a natural position. The toothed blade stops the pocket wall slipping back as the dissection proceeds.
