Soft Tissue Retractor, 14 cm – Fibre Optic Fitting

Overhead theatre light does not reach the bottom of a narrow exposure — the retractor itself, the wound edges and the surgeon’s hands all shadow it, so the deepest part of the field is the darkest. A fibre optic fitting moves the light to the blade, so illumination arrives where the work is and travels with the instrument as it is angled.

At 14 cm this is a short retractor, so the illumination is the reason to choose it rather than the reach. Where ambient light reaches the field or an assistant can hold a separate light, a plain retractor does the same retraction for a fraction of the cost. The fibre optic version earns its place in deep or confined work where neither is practical.
