What a single-prong retractor gives up in holding power it gains in visibility. One prong at one point leaves the surrounding field completely open, where a blade holds more tissue but occupies the space the surgeon is trying to see into. In a shallow or narrow exposure that trade usually favours the prong.

The sharp tip is what makes a single point hold at all — a blunt prong with no second contact simply slides off tissue under traction.
