A single prong occupies almost no space in the wound, which is the point. Where a blade or a multi-prong rake would fill a small exposure, one prong holds the tissue edge at a single point and leaves everything around it visible. That suits work where the surgeon needs a structure lifted clear rather than a whole wound held open.
Sharp rather than blunt follows from the same logic. A single blunt prong has only one contact point to hold with, and on skin or fascia it simply slides; a sharp prong engages the tissue edge and stays. The trade is that all the retraction force passes through that one point, so it is used on tissue robust enough to take it, and with steady traction rather than sudden pull.

Katarzyna Mazur –
Arrived exactly as expected. We ordered the Retractor, Single Prong, Sharp, 17cm Stainles for our practice and it has worked very well so far. Much better than a few other suppliers we tested recently. This will probably become our standard option going forward.
