Separating cartilage from the fascia bonded to it is the hardest part of this work. The two come apart only along one plane, and a smooth blade slides over that plane rather than entering it — pushing the fascia along instead of dividing it. A serrated blade grips and holds while the cut is made.
The angle brings the blades onto the working plane while the shanks stay clear of the nostril rim. At 17.8 cm these are long for nasal scissors, which is what allows them to reach both upper and lower cartilage from a single entry without the hand entering the nostril.
