A swan neck is a double bend in the shaft, so the blades sit offset from the handle in both planes rather than one. That gets the cutting end into a space the hand cannot approach directly — and in nasal tip work, where the surgeon is looking down at the structure being assessed, it keeps the hand out of that view entirely.

Blunt tips pair with the fine blades deliberately. Fine blades can divide delicate tissue, but a fine sharp point in a space the surgeon cannot fully see perforates what it meets. Blunting the tips removes that risk while the double-bevelled edges still cut cleanly between the blades, and carbide on both keeps them wearing evenly.
