Carbide matters more as the instrument gets longer, which is why all three lengths carry it. A long forceps is a lever: hand movement at the handle is magnified at the tips, and any slip in the grip is felt as the tissue shifting rather than as the jaws letting go. At 25 cm, deep in a cavity where the surgeon cannot see the jaws clearly, a jaw that has worn smooth gives up its hold without warning.
The three lengths cover the usual working depths. 15 cm keeps the hand at the wound edge for moderate exposures; 23 and 25 cm reach into abdominal and thoracic fields with the hand outside. Choosing the shortest length that reaches is the general rule — excess length only adds leverage the surgeon has to control.
