Walter Alar and Nasal Retractor, 18.5 cm – Fibre Optic

The alar region sits at the base of the nose, reached through an opening the width of a nostril. Overhead theatre light does not follow that corridor — the retractor, the nostril rim and the surgeon’s hand all shadow it — so the deepest part of the field is the darkest. Fibre optics put the light at the blade, where it is needed.

The universal adaptor is the practical half. A lighted instrument tied to one manufacturer’s light box is only usable where that box is, and theatres rarely standardise on one. Fitting standard sources means the retractor works with the light already in the room. At 18.5 cm it reaches the alar base with the handle and the light connection well outside the nostril.
