Ollier Israel Rake Retractor, 9 inch – 4 Blunt Prongs

Four prongs spread the hold across four points rather than one blade face, so the tissue is held at intervals and the gaps between prongs stay open. In a deep wound that matters twice over: the surgeon can see between the prongs, and the tissue is not compressed along a continuous line where a solid blade would press.

Blunt prongs rather than sharp is the choice that suits a retractor this long. Sharp prongs hold a skin edge more securely, but at 23 cm the surgeon has far less feel for how hard the tips are engaging, and a sharp point driven in by leverage does damage before it is noticed. Blunt prongs press and hold rather than penetrate, which is the safer trade at this reach.
