Gerald Thumb Forceps – Delicate Jaw, Straight or Curved

Two choices are made before this instrument reaches theatre. Serrated jaws or 1×2 teeth decides what it grips — serrations hold dressings and flat material by friction, teeth interlock through tissue. Straight or curved decides how it approaches: a straight tip goes where the hand points, a curved one reaches around a structure the hand cannot get behind.

What both share is the extra-fine jaw the Gerald pattern is known for. Micro dissection means separating structures that are millimetres apart, and a jaw thick enough to be robust is also thick enough to displace the tissue either side of what it is grasping. Keeping the jaw slim is what lets the instrument work between structures rather than pushing them apart — the same reasoning that governs the bayonet version of this pattern, which trades the straight shank for clearance in a deep field.
