Width is the answer to adhesion. When a periosteal membrane is firmly bonded to bone, a narrow blade concentrates all the separating force into a few millimetres of edge — and the membrane gives way at that point, tearing rather than peeling. A 9.0 mm blade spreads the same force along a much longer front, so the layer lifts as a sheet and the separation advances evenly instead of punching through.

The slight curve keeps that wide edge in contact. A 9.0 mm flat blade meets a convex bone surface on its corners only, and the middle of the edge never touches — which reintroduces exactly the point loading the width was meant to avoid. A gentle curve matched to facial bone contour puts the whole edge against the surface at once. At 19.1 cm the instrument suits rhinoplasty and facial work, where the bones are small enough that a larger elevator would overshoot the area being cleared.
