Hand surgery has a problem no other field has: the thing being operated on is also the thing that has to be held still, and it has fifteen joints that all move. A lead hand plate secures the hand and fingers in a set position so the surgeon can work on one structure without the rest of the hand shifting around it.
That is why it is a plate rather than a blade. The whole hand lies on it and individual fingers are held where the procedure needs them — flexed, extended or spread — and they stay there without an assistant holding each one. Adult sizing matters because the plate has to match hand span; a plate sized for a child cannot hold an adult hand in position at all.
