Spatulated means the tips are flattened and broadened rather than pointed. That turns the closed blades into a blunt wedge the surgeon pushes forward to separate tissue along its natural plane — the plane gives way, and anything that does not give way is not cut by accident.

The central third of the face and neck is where that matters most: facial nerve branches and vessels run through the same plane being opened, and they are not reliably visible from a remote incision. A pointed tip finds them; a spatulated one pushes past. Cutting is still available by closing the blades, so dissection and division stay separate decisions.
