Obwegeser Ramus Retractor – V-Notched Shape

A V-notch turns the retractor into a locating device. Pressed onto the posterior border of the ramus, the notch sits astride the bone so the instrument cannot slide forward or backward along it — the retractor is held by the anatomy rather than by the assistant’s grip. On a plain blade that same position has to be maintained continuously by hand.

That is worth most during a sagittal split, where the surgeon needs the ramus held in one exact position while the osteotomy is cut, and where the retractor is also protecting soft tissue on the far side of the bone. A blade that drifts a few millimetres mid-cut moves both the exposure and the protection at the same moment.
