The mandibular rim is a bone edge, and a retractor working there holds by hooking over it. That is a different mechanism from pressing against tissue: once seated on the rim, the instrument is located by the bone itself and stays put as the surgeon works, rather than needing continuous force to hold position.
20 cm is the middle of the Obwegeser range — longer than the 16 cm chin retractor because the mandibular border sits further back and deeper than the chin, shorter than the 22 cm alveolar and nasal spine patterns. What the rim exposure demands most is rigidity: the retractor is often levering against bone while a saw or fixation plate is worked alongside it, and a blade that flexes moves the field at exactly the wrong moment.
