A longer instrument here adds leverage the surgeon has to control without adding any reach they need.
Because the chin is a curved prominence rather than a flat surface, the hold depends on the blade sitting against that contour instead of resting on one edge. The retractor takes sustained pressure in a field where the surgeon is cutting and fixing bone, so German stainless is specified for a blade that must not flex under that load across repeated sterilisation.
